They're making one of my all-time favorite books into a movie, with Michael Cera in the lead role. If you haven't read this, get on it. Besides the fact that most of it takes place in Ukiah, it's one of the funniest books I've ever read. Except for The Road by Cormac Mccarthy. That was hilarious.

Hey, "Youth in Revolt" on the list of books I want for my upcoming birthday!

Speaking of fun, you should spend a friday night in the newsroom.

The newspaper editors have discussed countries that are the shape of discarded condoms, the efficiency of handgranades versus homemade bombs and if it would be in bad taste to add "guns of brixton" by the clash to a slideshow of images from a shooting that occurred tonight. we all agreed that "non, je ne regrette rien" by edit piaf was completely inappropriate. (I should add that nobody was injured.)

oh yeah, and we managed to update the website put together tomorrows paper as well.

how was your friday?

HAH! Yes! I heard about this! Now I feel important for actually knowing something you talk about. XD I think Michael Cera will be perfect.

It must be a fantastic book if it takes place in Ukiah. Plus with Michael Cera as the leading man, this film is going to be stellar. I'll definitely pick it up next time I'm at Barnes and Noble. :)

ok, so the dork librarian i am had to look up a book review, and library journal made me laugh on this one - "...Payne obviously has a vivid and ribald recollection of adolescence, but his recounting is overlong and lacking in real direction. Maybe you had to have been there. Not recommended." HAHA. I don't think I have seen such a blatant dis in a review in awhile.

the storyline still seems interesting though. Reminds me a bit of King Dork or Doing It or The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian or Adrian Mole. Ok...obviously I read my share of prepubescent boy lit. pfff. thanks for passing it along.

devin said...

i love it when books are made into movies. i think, if the director has the right idea, that they can almost accurately portray a lot of things that readers imagine. the first harry potter book was definitely a great movie, and so was pride and prejudice (all versions). i don't know who michael cera is; however, i will definitely look into him. :]

ps - it's my birthday monday (the day before adam's), and i just thought i'd tell you how excited i am. i'll finally be able to get into dave and buster's and play video games all night long ahahahaha.

Taide said...

Hey! I will read it.
I loved "The Road".
Have you read "Firmin" by Sam Savage? I've just read it. It's great.

Susan said...

correction - pubescent boy lit. hormones, definitely lots of hormones. oh to be young and horny. too bad not much action happens at that point in life. that was a rather irresponsible comment from me. shameful.

Anonymous said...

I loved this book, a great over dramatization of youth. I just hope that even though they're making it into a movie, people will still read the book, as well as Revolting Youth after. As usual, the books are better.

p.s. Nick crashing into the gourmet ghetto is priceless.

leongyiting said...

I don't know the books nor the actor. I must live quite a deprived life. Hahaha.

Btw, I'd just realised that your top 10 metal songlist only mentioned five songs. Where are the other five?

Qarlieaux said...

I'll learn to read just for this.

Awesome!!!

I can't wait to see it now!

bloodstainxx said...

Haven't read this book yet.. Maybe I should?

Buuni said...

There's nothing that strikes a funny bone quite like a post-apocalyptic world of sheer desolation. Haha, I wouldn't call The Road "hilarious" per say.

I read it in about a few hours on a flight. The abundance of sentence fragments and lack of punctuation was interesting. . .but, I adored the contrasting imagery between light and dark.

Danika said...

ha. cool Jade. i should check it out sometime. never heard of that book. if you said its good, it must be. lol

p.s. you should check out the book Twilight, its a great book [it's about vampires and stuff, but its good i give it two thumbs up]
they're making a movie of it too.

Haras said...

I'll have to check out the book next time I'm at the bookstore.

Also, Michael Cera's a fox.

Miraenda said...

I watch a lot of movies a year, but I've never heard of this Michael Cera guy until recently. Since this is the second time the name was mentioned, I decided to IMDb him and his filmography tells me why I haven't heard of him. Other than Juno (haven't actually see it yet either), I haven't seen or heard of any of those shows or movies, although "Braceface" sounds like a winner.

Haven't read that book either. I am familiar with "The Road"'s existence, but haven't yet read it. None of the things you've read are ever on my list of books lol, which I can cast into a positive light to say now I have more books to add to my ever growing list.

Sarizzle said...

Oh Jade. You're such a good influence on us kiddies.

I'll definitely pick it up.

That book is at zero of the libraries in this area. Darn farms.

I'm glad you mentioned that you enjoyed The Road by Cormac McCarthy. My friend and I were looking at it at the bookstore the other day and considering adding it to our [ever growing] lists. Of course, I have to finish Life of Pi by Yann Martel, The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie, and White Teeth by Zadie Smith before I start either of the two in this post. Mind you, this is all NON academic reading, and I'm a Writing major and am assigned to read quite a lot. So it may be a while.

It's always thrilling when a book/movie is set near your home. The Lovely Bones takes place right in my county, and all of M. Night Shyamalan's movies are filmed around here, too. I'll definitely have to read this and see what Ukiah is like. <3

That's the one that Adam called his favourite book in a magazine interview. I've read only half of it, but it IS funny funny stuff. I plan on reading the other half when I finish the book I need to read for school.

I sound like a nerd. I am a nerd.
Haha

i didnt know who Michael Cera was until i had to look him up.

i had myself confused. i was thinking that Michael Cera was the guy who played that dude from Napoleon Dynamite. (and i havent seen that movie either!) turns out it was someone else.

it goes to show that i havent been watching enough movies!

This is gonna rule so hard.
Perhaps too hard, it could become a concern. What I wanna know is, who's gonna play Sheeni?

Now only if the Guillmero Del Toro was directing it, it'd be like a cinematic orgy of rule.

Also, whenever I read the words My beloved in this book(because it says it so many times) I think of the song by you guys(AFI) Ever and a day.

Michael Cera as Nick?
Erm.

But, fantastic book, I hope the movie does the book justice. Woody Allen should direct it.

I am not a fan of epistolary novels, mainly due to my dislike for that damn e.n. "The Coquette". Maybe I am being too closed minded, I will give "Youth in Revolt" a go.

P.S. Jade, you could become the new Oprah in her thin days--tell the people what to read, Jade, tell the people haha.

oh, boy! thanks, Jade!! that's exactly what I need! a nice funny book to read in a train, cause you know.. I've decided to go to the other city to get to Korn and Deathstars concert in a couple of days.. very exited about that, btw.. so thanx again)

I love Micheal Cera and I trust your opinion, so I went out and picked this up today so I could read it before the movie comes out. It's sitting on my dresser waiting for me to start reading it once I finish up some laundry. I'm excited, it looks good.

It was like 18 bucks for the soft cover, though. Thanks a lot, Borders.

Speaking of movies, what;s your favorite t.v quote (or movie)?

Mine would have to be from 3rd Rock From The Sun "I've got the hip-hop streak don't care about nothin' because I'm all of that and a side of fries." Classic!
I also just saw Juno and I love the part when Ellen Page said, "All I can think about are pork swords" It was fantabulos!

How have you been? I hope your doing well darling!

Yeah...The Road is so hilarious I have to stop reading it after a few pages to keep myself from becoming overly depressed.

It´s quite hard to finish this book if you can only read about four or five pages a day.

I´ll check that other book out. Maybe it´ll counter The Road...

paradajz said...

Hey Jade, sry to say this but i don't think it's gonna be a good movie, it'll turn out like superbad (which was NOT good). I really hope that it'll be ok but i wouldn't put my money on it. Btw you said your EP is gonna come out soon, well soon is now and i don't see a new EP

hurry up please

Hey,
Isn't that book part of Oprah's book club?

YIR has been my favorite book since about ten years ago when I picked it up on a sale shelf somewhere. I just found out there were all of these sequels I hadn't read yet. If you haven't read all of them, don't walk, RUN, to the nearest library/bookstore and get them. The first one is still the best, but it was nice to have some closure.

1thatuloath said...

AHAHAHAHA! I shall get right on it Jade. Oh God, we're reading The Road in English and analysing. We, I read it months ago but like no one else reads. The ending pisses me off

The Road is a book worthy of a read by the Lord Jesus himself.

Why it took me so long to comment on this entry will always remain a mystery. Anyways, bet you like the book because Twisp calls his Mom the Corn Dog Queen:P Michael Cera is an excellent choice for that role.
