I'm glad to see that my 2 favorite activities are also your 2 favorite activities.
On a different note, isn't it nice when you're listening to your ipod on shuffle and a song comes on that you haven't thought about in forever?
I'm going to make some recommendations now and again, and here's my first 2:

The Get Up Kids- Red Letter Day EP

Cradle of Filth- Midian

In the days of AFI van tours, I used to make tons of driving mixes and these were two repeated sources. Obviously two very different styles but they somehow work together.

Yeah Cradle of Filth is pretty wicked.
I'm still getting used to the shuffle business though, but it can be fun.

Carrying your music collection in your pocket was the best idea, and shuffle was the next best.

I can't seem to listen to anything super amazing while reading, though. I get distracted.

Buzz Royale said...

the first band I don't know and I don't like the second one XD

darkness069 said...

I wonder how you combined those two...
But music to be carried with you for hours so easily? best thing ever created, for sure.

Good to see you around!

I love it when that happens! In fact I tend to forget the greatness of Reivers Music sometimes, then when it starts playing I remember what an amazing song it is.

JB said...

I do that all the time. I'll have my iPod on and I'll be all, "=o I totally forgot this song existed!"

Just the other day I rediscovered Sugar Ray's version of Abracadabra, Smash by the Murmurs, Blind Guardian's Punishment Divine, Alan Jackson's Here In The Real World, and a song by a band you've probably never heard of. Can't remember their name, but it was a catchy little tune called Snuff On Digital.

I kid, I kid, but I did rediscover my love for those songs. In between learning the german Tokio Hotel songs that is.

I know, I listen to so many different styles of music.

I'm going to be on the road with mah band in hopefully six months, I should so make us some driving mixes XD I'll drive them all NUTS.

We'll be airguitaring to AFI one minute, then Rascal Flatts'll pop up, followed by some good ol' Backstreet Boys, Beach Boys, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Aaron Lines...maybe a little Rammstein...

Every once in a while Public Enemy's 'Sophisticated Bitch' will pop up in shuffle and I laugh. It's the only song by them I have but it's so good.

I need to invest in an ipod, though. Windows Media Player on shuffle gets lame after a while.

I love making mixes, and omg Get Up Kids - I'd totally forgotten them! I made a mix the other day that had Willie Nelson and Hanoi Rocks back to back followed by a little Skynyrd and Foo Fighters.

Kristi said...

I never listen to my ipod on shuffle, but maybe I should. This happens all the time to me when I listen to old CDs though. I found an old The Faint mix I made 4 years ago, and decided to go buy a CD of theirs at Amoebia last night.

I had my ipod on shuffle last night and Men Without Hats "Safety Dance" came on and I thought that was funny. Although it is a good song.

Sometimes I think my head is on shuffle. Today I suddenly thought of Ballad of Lucy Jordan and went around the office singing about driving through Paris in a sports car. :)

Haven't listened to Marianne Faithfull in ages...

i think i'm the only person that likes reggie and the full effect more than the get up kids. but that's just me.

but i think its cool how you listen to different kinds of music. i figure it would be boring to just listen to one genre.

Teehee, funniest thing happened the other day. My friend and I had her Ipod in her Ihome and we we had it on shuffle while we were drawing. Her mom walks in, the Ihome switches songs and We Want Cunt by Jeffree Star came on. We had to hold down our laughter and her mom was kinda like, "My god what do you kids listen to these days!". If my mom new what I listened to most of the time, she'd disown me. Only thing she hates is when I replay my AFI cd's over and over down in my room, but the music is up so loud that she could hear it halfway down the street. She didn't mind the music until I started listened to it non-stop, hehe.

I'm going to have to listen to The Get Up Kids and Cradle of Filth back to back and see how that works. Cause right now I do not see how that works together.

I don't mind The Get Up Kids. I absolutly love James Dewees though.

That happens to me all of the time. My iPod is rarely off of shuffle. Shuffle is my best friend.

Steffi said...

Both are great!! Oh.... just today me and my friends were listening to an ipod(illegally during school) and a random song came on. my friend was like who the hell is that? and i was like AFI stupid! Then they were like I knew that I was just testing you! and then I said ok, what song is it then? they were like uhhhh.......i...don't remember!? Then i was like Dancing Through Sunday you stupe! then they were like oh.....
I was soo stupid. And they say they are true AFI fans. they should be ashamed!!

an older lady i work with was walking around today with a walkman on (of the cassette variety). i felt like i was in a time warp.

my husband's always trying to get me to put the ipod on shuffle in the car, since I apparently listen to the same (insert choice word) over and over.

The caustics won't caustic for me said...

I'm behind on the times so I don't have an ipod, but 5 disc changer works fine haha. That was such a bad ass album by cradle of filth, and shockingly I've been listening to it a lot this week.

I make strange playlists. I made one with songs from all the bands on my ipod and it was 700 songs long. I will never listen to it all the way through.
My ipod has schizophrenia. it doesn't stay in one type of music for very long. :)

Straight To Hell said...

Yeah, I usually don't put my ipod on shuffle because it sucks. It will play like 5 songs by one band then do one song for a different band then go back to the previous band again. But when I do put it on shuffle, I am sometimes surprised wtih a song i've not heard in awhile. So yeah, its nice.
Whenever I make a mixed cd the song Lost in the supermarket by the clash pretty much ends up on each one of them.Same with Rudie can't fail.

Lauren/Suzy/Bobby Joe said...

I never put my iPod on shuffle but sometimes I go back in my iTunes library and check out all my old CDs.

I like to listen to music and read at the same time. Except I usually forget what I read because I'm mostly paying attention to the song lyrics. Although, right now your Demonomania cover just started playing and the lyrics are pretty easy to understand.

I love when that happens. I'm picky about what I put on my iPods (Shuffle, 1st-gen Nano, Nano video), so that more happens when I've got iTunes on shuffle. Often I'm playing Spider Solitaire at the time.

I have to say, my Shuffle knows me even when I don't know myself. If I don't know what I feel like hearing one day, I set the ol' iPod to Shuffle and it just knows what my subconscious needs.

Rediscovering old songs is one of the most comforting feelings in the world, for reals.

Epiph said...

I love my shuffle. And I love it when it picks up songs I was just thinking of a few minutes before.

I even love it more when all I'm listening to is all of AFI (including back in the early nineties) and I'll have a DU song playing one minute, and then a Very Proud of Ya song comes up the next. I tend to laugh when that happens... just randomly.

I love variety.

Feh, my iPod doesn't hold enough to shuffle right. I only have like 2 GB, because it was the first Nano and apparently things that came out like three years ago are oh-so-outdated. It also likes playing huge blocks of songs by the same artist, so there's like no point.

And I still worship Apple, somehow.

Tokio Hotel. Love them. I've learned lots of German from them. Ha, "Spring nicht, Bill! SPRING NICHT!" And speaking of them, when I went to pick up my copy of Scream America, I freaked because I didn't know your remix of Ready Set Go would be on it. I sort of stood in the middle of the aisle just staring at the tracklisting with my jaw resting on the ground below. But I finally recovered and bought it (for much less than it was worth, by the way) and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it.

Cradle of filth! oh my yes, wearing a COF t shirt right now infact - its really old and faded, can hardly make out what it says, but its still good.
Does anyone remember a tv show on channel 4 (uk) years ago (7-8 years?)called *living with the enemy*?.It was about people who have a big old hate for someone, having to live with them for 2 weeks, to see what they are really about.
One of them was this woman who was convinced that listening to COF was harming her son. So she was sent on tour with them for 2 weeks,to see for herself. Cant remember much, but i do recall her crying in the ladies bathroom at a gig, and getting a hug from Danni Filth who was saying something like "its ok, its all just fun, no-one will hurt you".
I think she ended being cool with them...and possibly thinking they were sweet boys!.
Dont tend to shuffle myself...thats just too much on the edge for me!

I had kind of forgotten all about Thievery Corporation until "Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes" came on shuffle last week; I was into a huge acid-jazz phase in college so it was a nice little blast from the past. And Emiliana Torrini is one of my favorite vocalists ever. Kind of like a folksier Bjork who might invite you over for herbal tea or something.

As for driving mixes...when we drove to Vegas for the Blaqk Audio show (=D) there was a lot of Sean Paul and Killswitch Engage going on. Strange bedfellows, but they worked.

I love the Get Up Kids. I always wear a TGUK shirt or hoodie when I go to a show, because I always get comments from people about how cool they are. And then I feel cool for sporting the merch. But I feel even more cool when I listen to them. You even told me in... 2006 in Edmonton that my blue panda TGUK shirt was awesome. That's how cool they are.

Not so much into COF. I saw them one time, and I just wasn't so enthralled with their flashing booby pictures on the screen. Maybe it's just me though.

i think it's so great that you paired those two bands. so great that i had to comment. i had a tape with the get up kids 'four minute mile' on one side and boysetsfire 'the day the sun went out' on the other. i have forever paired those two bands in my head because of it. and it totally works.

ps. knitting is my activity of choice, but i chose reading as a close second. i spent one afternoon at a courthouse a few weeks back (babysitting during a hearing) and opted to read the whole time. i love moments like that when people are bustling all around, and i'm in my own little world. i don't think people read nearly enough anymore. have you noticed that in some of the bigger book stores there are more people sleeping in chairs than actually reading?
yikes.

Cradle of Filth is so cool... But Dani Filth is so idiot, lol.

I don't read your blog since 2006... I just forgot my blogspot account, but now I'm back, and I'm gonna (or try to) read all your 2007/2008 posts, hehe.

Xoxo!
