proposition 8 outlaws gay marriage in the state of california.

Mark is just defending his rights.

I'm glad he and Richard got out okay, and that he was able to spread the word on the news and all over the internet!

Yeah, people here in San Francisco aren't happy at all. It's lame that it passed, thought people were a bit better than this...

Prop. 8 is absolute bullshit & I can't believe it's 2008 coming to an end yet people are acting as if this is 19th century or something.

Next thing you know they'll be back to burning witches. Idiots.

Hope it all works out for Mark, that arrest was beyond uncalled for & total bullshit.

wow! poor mark! i'm not american so i'm not entirly sure what it was about, but there is nothing wrong with gay marriage!
its nobody elses business what individual people want to do!
this SO echoes of the oppression of us Irish citizens by the Catholic Church back in my parents youth.
don't get me wrong, my father is a born again christian, but its this type of stupitity that led me to change my faith.
we can't let one creed, no matter how popular, dictate the laws and rights of everyone!
i'm a proud bisexual girl and i would never let the state dictate who i can marry and who (according to them) i can't!
its blatant homophobia! thats what it is!
lets all hope mark gets out soon!

GO MARK! its nice hes defending his rights.... WOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

and so begins the decline into the dark ages. How do these ideas even get acknowledged let alone passed as laws. You just know it's the godbothers in control and I thought Brits could be dumb little flockers but this is beyond inane.
Hope your friend doesn't suffer for his bravery.

It's horrible that he got arrested at all for that...UHG, some people in our society today are absolutely idiotic!!!

I totally support anyone who wants to get married!!! It's everyone's right!!!

Vynterchilld said...

WTF???Gay marriage STILL isn't allowed in America??? If there's one thing I never understood, that's homophobia!...I thought your gov would eventually allow gay marriage, because it doesn't bring any harm to the community! If they think that 2 gays, if get married, would instantly become serial killers & rapists, then they are absolute idiots! If they think prop 8 would make them straight, that ain't gonna happen!!! America - the land of close minded fucktards!... I'm really sorry that you and your friend Mark, and millions of other normal & open minded people have to live there!...

frozen oceans said...

wow. why cant people understand that regardless of your sexual orientation, everyone should be able to enjoy the same rights and liberties?

that crap about the "sanctity of marriage" is just that- crap.

if two people love each other, they should be allowed to celebrate that with marriage if they want.

what is everyone so scared of???

sugarandice said...

Oh no! I'm glad he was doing something that he believed in! But what happened to him is so awful! :/

(I wanted to say something like, 'Crazy times we live in when you have to demonstrate, protest, and get arrested for something you believe in.' And then I realized that things like this have been happening for so long in our nation's history.)

I guess this is the process through which change occurs, according to America. And Mark is now officially part of it - on the books and all. I only wish I lived in California so I could have voted on a few of the propositions out there last Tuesday. :/

Cyanidendsugar said...

haha nicee.

NightShade said...

Mortifying. Thanks for posting this, Jade.

Until we "divorce" the concept of the legal contract between two people from the religious concept of marriage, this shit is going to keep happening all around the country. Keep speaking out, people. And read Sam Harris.

Anonymous said...

Who cares, really? He's just a fag

Orangutan's daughter said...

I can't believe prop.8 passed.
I mean, they should take a look at the fact that they want to do that legaly and even religiously more than couples between a man and a woman; and NOT the fact that they have the same gender -_-
If we are going to look at that on the way those morons who voted yes do, gay people is trying to keep "the values" even more than straight people.
I mean WTF? WHY people still care in with whom they are with?
A person is lucky if they find someone, it shouldn't fucking matter the gender and especially if they want to consolidate the union legally or not.

Hope Mark is alright tho!

RosesAreBlue said...

Prop 8 = violation of civil rights.
Good for him. Hope he's okay.

Susan said...

I was surprised when it passed. A similar amendment (prop 2) passed this week in my homestate of FL. This topic gets me fired up so I won't even get started. Sorry to hear your friend got arrested, but kudos to those standing up for equal rights!

Susan said...

"silly girls win"...

legalizing gay marriage is not just about love. along with marriage, couples gain many legal rights (property rights, medical rights, insurance rights, parenting rights, immigration rights, etc). Not to mention that this is just flat out discrimination.

http://gaylife.about.com/od/samesexmarriage/f/civilmarriage.htm

so seriously, it does matter.

Mark said...

I think everyone should at least have their right to vote and that's what happened. It's like the Obama hate going around, let it go because if you don't believe it's fair then don't live in the United States. It's nobody's fault because people have the right to voice their opinion. Now that people are focusing on certain religions as the fault, isn't that discrimination and hate? Let's all get along and live a little better.

Karlye said...

I heard about this from Ramon on Twitter, and the lack of updates from Mark on Twitter proved the point. Poor guy, he was just standing up for his rights that he has now been denied. And if you look at the video here (go to 2:40)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yb6POxsxUrU# you see that Mark was violently pushed to the ground by the LAPD. I don't know if Mark and Rich did anything to upset the cops or what, but they certainly did not deserve to be arrested, they're both so kind.

However, they are fucking heroes for enduring what they went through. Major kudos to them. And like Shana said, this is only the beginning, if these protests continue, we will have a civil rights movement on our hands. Which is what it should be, Prop 8 is the most ridiculous proposition ever, the fact that it passed disgusts me. It needs to end.

Claire said...

Makes me thinks of the demonstrations in Chicago in '68. Here's to Mark and the future when this holier than thou bullshit rolls over and dies along with Prop. 8!

well fuck, that stinks. So much for allowing voices to be heard in peace.

tinamarie said...

Here in Arizona we passed our own stupid constitutional ammendment that defines marriage as "one woman, one man." I cried. My 13 year old daughter went door to door on Halloween trick-or-treating and at every door she was like "Vote NO on Prop. 102" When the proposition passed, we were both angry and very sad.

When are we going to realize that any time we open the door to discrimination and hatred that we damage everyone's rights and safety? What are we here in Arizona going to do when some backwards state (not naming names...the south...the south) decides that they don't approve of interracial marriages? Over 1/2 the marriages in AZ are interracial. And we, idiots that we are, opened the door by ammending our constitution so that we could refuse to recognize gay marriages done in California.

And just so you know, I'm an ordained Methodist minister. Not all Christians are stupid, narrow-minded, homophobes. Really. As a matter of fact, the majority of Methodist clergy in this state are fighting for gay rights such as marriage and ordination (in our denomination.) Just so you know.

IDK who he is, or even if he is gay or straight, but this I know: the governement should shut the fuck up and let people do things when they don't negatively affect anyone.

Arrested? Wow. It was for a worthy cause though. Good to see people fighting for equality.

Oh, it makes me so mad that Prop 8 passed! How can such a basic right as the right to dignity and equality through marriage be denied? How can we discriminate people under the law? Now I'm all riled up.

You know what, good for Mark.

You were there?

Todd said...

>:O Shocked and appalled, Sir.

Straight To Hell said...

I was so fuckin in utter disappointment when that passed..Seriously..What is so wrong with gay marriage? Why do they not deserve equal rights? They are people just like everyone else..They are human beings who love other human beings..Sounds like the same fucking thing to me..God, this whole thing pisses me off. I have a lot of friends who were just crushed when this passed...It was a sad day for America when that was passed. God, I can't describe how much this angers me.

This Girl said...

I'm absolutely taken aback by the passing of Prop 8. I really look up to people like Mark and all those who protested who are trying to defend their rights.

Miraenda said...

Election night was so bittersweet. Obama was announced as our next president. I went to visit CNN's site to see how Prop 8 was doing and saw 54% had voted Yes. I felt like crying. I can't understand how the people who voted on Obama then went on to vote Yes on something that takes away the rights of others.

Thanks to those who are protesting to stand up for our rights and risking jail for us all. I'm stuck in Iowa until next week, or else I'd have been in San Diego at the protests that went on there.

Do these people not remember that this country was founded off of a bunch of Brits wanting to have religious freedom? And we celebrate that, thinking them brave for standing up for their "rights". But then look at this; I see no difference. It's just that now, there isn't an unexplored land that these people can sail off to. So now they have to sit back and let the rest of America push them around - literally, by the looks of these videos. Everyone I've talked to that is anti-gay can only back up their opinions with "It's just not normal." And so that makes it wrong? "It goes against Christianity." SO LAWS SHOULD BE BASED OFF OF A CERTAIN RELIGION? What has happened to this country!? The "freedoms" its citizens are supposed to have? Ugh, it's so horrible that this was passed. [/rant]
Glad Mark and Rich are okay now, though.
