When you make a mix for someone, it's usually a friend who might listen to many of the same bands as you, so it's hard to come up with the perfect songs because you don't want to include tracks that the person already has/knows, but you don't want to put a slew of mediocre b-sides on it and wind up with a boring mix either.
If you were making a mix of 10 songs for a person that had never heard....anything, what would they be?

.....interesting choices.   For the people that replied in spanish, I did my best to translate but my 4 years of high school espanol have left me muy rusty.

a mix of AFI, Blaqk Audio, Hunter Revenge, Alesana, Escape The Fate and more AFI!

Kayleigh Puget said...

It would be mostly AFI-themed, sire.
I don't know why I answer your questions when you never answer mine. These kind of things are usually two-sided in real life. But I guess you're just used to interviews -_-'

God I'm annoyed because someone is having a hate-campaign against me for something I didn't actually do. It's getting me down, and I'm still ill :(

Hmm, that's an interesting question there. Let's see, it would most likely be some eclectic mix that would confuse more than anything. It would include:
Bach, Mozart, Dvorak, The Beatles (at least 2 maybe 3), AFI, Blaqk Audio (really to demonstrate the vaste differences and choises in music), The Who, David Usher, The Tea Party, Sam Roberts, Oasis and I dunno, soundracks composers like Danny Elfman, Howard Shore?(?) I think I got more than 10 there, eh? Oh well, it would be hard to choose...

3. Starlight by Muse
4. Rainbows by Alice Nine
5. Baby, It's Fact by Hellogoodbye

7. A Favor House Atlantic by Coheed and Cambria
8. Tears Don't Fall by Bullet for My Valentine
9. Snow Scene by Antic Cafe
10. Endlessly, She Said by AFI

I'm not sure about that order was so hard to pick ten...couldn't it have been twenty?

ciel said...

Only 10 songs? Oh damn, well that'd be tough to pick! But, hmm, The Cure, Moz, AFI, CXS, would def be on it.

I know what you mean. Every end of the semester, the club I'm in has a mix CD exchange, and it's hard because we all sort of listen to the same music.

1. AFI - Wester
2. Motion City Soundtrack - Invisible Monsters
3. Bright Eyes - Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh
4. Thrice - Broken Lungs
5. Rise Against - Generation Lost
6. Chiodos - All Nereids Beware
7. Brand New - The Archers Bows Have Broken
8. Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earch:3
9. Four Year Strong - Heroes Get Remembered, Legends Never Die

Rough list..haha.

Oh, I love making mixes for people. If you asked any of my coworkers or friends or family, they'd all probably have one. I take so much time to have a general theme with it, and find the perfect songs, and then put them in the perfect order so they flow well from mood to mood. Putting all of that aside, here is what I would pick for you, Jade, and likely scrawl "Mellow" across it and draw something that is reminiscent of a sunset with various Sharpies.

1> Cigarettes, Wedding Bands - Band of Horses
2> On the Bus Mall - Decemberists
3> Imaginary (Origin version) - Evanescence
4> Confessions - City and Colour
5> Bittersweet - Apocalyptica
6> Angeles - Elliott Smith
7> So Jealous - Tegan and Sara
8> Caring is Creepy - The Shins
9> Konstantine - Something Corperate
10> Jack's Mannequin - Dark Blue

I had to stop myself from putting AFI on it, since you've probably heard those songs (*wink*), but Elliott Smith deserved the spot even though you love it. I can't get enough of that song.

I love my piano and cellos, so I'll stamp that warning on there as well. Check them out if you want to change your life. <3

aw, jade, do you really read these things? (it’s impossible to tell.) or do you ask us these questions to see how many of us silly fans will do as you say?

This was really hard, and I’ll probably smack myself in the head later and say, “I should’ve put *fill in blank*” but, anyway. These are not necessarily my favorite songs, but representative of popular-ish music throughout the decades for someone who has “never heard anything.”

Hank Williams—Long Gone Lonesome Blues.
Fats Domino—Blue Monday
Louis Prima—I Wanna Be Like You
The Rolling Stones—Wild Horses
The Ramones—Sheena is a Punk Rocker
Duran Duran—Girls on Film
Def Leppard—Pour Some Sugar on Me

I make my bf mixes sometimes, like when he leaves on a plane to go somewhere for a week or when I feel like I was a moron and made him feel bad for something.

I usually am very safe in that situation because I include lots of pop songs, old and new and he's not very much into them so he doesn't hear them very often. But I tell him to listen to the words more than anything else since he always complains about the "fake" music.

technically, if someone had never heard ANYTHING ever, they would not like music, it would be like noise to them because they would not have made the subconscious connections of knowing what notes sound "good" and "bad" together, and i dont know if they could still get to like it, maybe with time, but the initial kind of music they hear to "learn" music language would be CRUCIAL to the way they perceive music for the rest of their lives, so i really hope you wouldnt show them something like gangster rap haha..

-"Jesse's Girl" by Rick Springfield (This song rules. It's impossible to listen to it without smiling.)

-"One Step Beyond" by Madness (See reasons for "Jesse's Girl".)

-"Unity" by Operation Ivy (Favourite band of all time and the inspiration for my first tattoo. Oh, to be 16 again...)

-"Clampdown" by The Clash (Has Joe Strummer been canonized yet? Because he should be.)

-"21 Questions" by 50 Cent (Obviously you would need an example of crappy ring tone hop-hip, and at least this one features the gem "I love you like a fat kid loves cake".)

-"Standing Outside The Fire" by Garth Brooks (Oh man. This song is inspiration incarnate. And can we talk about the video?!? It breaks my heart every time that poor kid falls on the track.)

-"Friday I'm In Love" by The Cure (Again, it's a "Jesse's Girl" thing.)

-"Donkey Riding" by Great Big Sea (Where I come from, everyone knows at least ten ridiculous Celtic songs. This one is possibly the best.)

-"Smack My Bitch Up" by Prodigy (I really feel like this song embodies the zeitgeist of the era. Or maybe I just like songs that say "bitch". See "50 Cent".)

-"Heroin" by the Velvet Underground (I actually bought The Velvet Underground and Nico as an introduction to music for my little sister about fifteen years ago. She turned out cool. Coincidence? I think not.)

I'm really into Garbage this last time so defo it'll be songs from them...And it's very hard to decide which one =S
Hmmmm...Let's see...

The Cranberries - Zombie.
Queen - Somebody to Love.
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit.
U2 - Mysterious ways.
No Doubt - Just a Girl.
The Offsprings - The Kids Aren't Alright.
Garbage - Cherry Lips.

I don't do mixes, except once, when my sister said "Come on, make me a CD of songs you want me to listen to." I tried my best to put the songs in an order they would flow well, dunno if it worked. But I won't break my head at this here, it's already hard to pick just 10 songs...

So. If we assume that an E.T. comes to me and tells me that he wants to hear what plays around in this corner of the galaxy, I will just send him to someone else who knows better the big classics of our world. However, if it's some friendly alien who wants to know me from what I listen to, here are the 10 songs I would make him listen to:

1-Luca Turilli-Prince of the Starlight
2-Rhapsody-Emerald sword
3-Children of Bodom-Downfall
4-Sonata Arctica-Victoria's Secret
6-AFI-Girl's Not Grey
7-Blaqk Audio-Snuff On Digital
8-Ensiferum-Lai Lai Hei
9-Cradle of Filth-Nymphetamine
10-Dimmu Borgir-Vredesbyrd

I would have put some ballads too, so if he's not tired after this, I would play him:

Sonata Arctica-Tallulah
Nightwish-Sleeping Sun
AFI-This Time Imperfect

A bit of less known gems that I've heard by listening to radio KOL or watching the "obscure" parts of MTV, VH1 or MuchMusic.

Maybe adjusting some parts and picking which ones could be more welcome or easier to get into for the person, based on their musical tastes.

Well the 10 tracks would deffinitely be like dance music and some rock... but hey, about the girl that wrote you in spanish, she says the following (sort of):

"Hey jade, you're the greates guitar player on the world, I love you, you shoud come to mexico and sign some autographs 'cause I'm your # 1 fan in the world, I'm terribly sorry I didn't send you anything for your birthday, but hwey, happy birthday, I made a banner on my room for you, I'll post pics latter, I sang happy birthday and "las mañanitas" (traditional hb mexican song" to a picture of you that I have in my room, I have been listening (i think is afi, because she doesn't mention any band or anything) in my way to california from mexico. please come to mexico (and by the way, I'm colombian, so you should make a latin amrica tour... not all latin america is mexico... (I know you probably don't think that way and you sure know this, but many artists anounce latin american tours, but they end up doing a two night show in mexico))"

well, that's the translation, hope you're doing great with the album and yeah, well, bye, take care, cheers to the rest of afi, come to colombia, etc, etc,etc (you know, the rest of things that fans say...)

Hyro said...

This is kind of like asking “What are your 10 favorite songs?” Impossible to answer, but here goes:

1. Superheroes – Esthero
2. Six Days – DJ Shadow
3. The National Anthem – Radiohead
4. A Day in the Life – The Beatles
5. Now the World – AFI
6. Step Into a World (Rapper’s Delight) – KRS One
7. Panjabi MC – Jay-Z
8. House of Jealous Lovers – The Rapture
9. 21st Century Schizoid Man – King Crimson

…and because it was the first song I ever remember liking: Everything I Do, I Do It For You – Bryan Adams.

Honorable mentions:
*I Will Always Love You – Whitney Houston, because it was the first song to make me cry.
*Ma Cherie Amour – Stevie Wonder, because the first boy who ever kissed me danced with me to this song.
*You and Me Song – The Wannadies, because this is “our” song (i.e. me and Stevie Wonder boy).
MmmmmBop – Hanson, just because.

You know, your question kind of reminds me of my younger self, because I didn’t discover the radio until I was 10. Funny thing was, I didn’t grow up in the tundra or a former Soviet satellite country. I grew up in the suburbs outside LA. Popular music just wasn’t a part of my life, I guess. In high school, Stevie Wonder boy made me a mix tape, because at the time I only knew horrible boyband music. Here’s what I remember was on it:

Breath From Another – Esthero
Heaven Sent – Esthero
An old Lenny Kravitz song that I can’t remember now
What Is Hip – Tower of Power
93 ‘til Infinity – Souls of Mischief
Hyperballad – Bjork
Superheroes - Esthero
Ventura Highway – America

So I guess if you were making a mix tape for a person that had never heard anything, you should put these songs on there.

Toxic Narcotic-Drink
Anal Cunt-Old Lady Across the Hall With No Life
Queen-Bohemian Rhapsody (Can't leave that shit out)
Joy Division-Love Will Tear Us Apart
The Smiths-There Is A Light..
Killing The Dream-4 Years Too Late
The Cure-Disintegration
Johnny Cash-Ghost Riders In The Sky

I'm being totally serious about the first and second songs. I'll probably get bashed by all these kids for not listing your band..

first thoughts, in no particular order...

--Halo - The Cure
--Bei Mir Bist du Schoen (version from Swing Kids)
--Tangerine - Led Zeppelin
--Kruetzer sonata - Beethoven
--Try Me - James Brown
--The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight - REM
--Jack the Ripper - Morrissey
--Eve of Destruction - Barry McGuire
--Fantasie Impromptu - Chopin
--something by The Doors or Nirvana? can't decide...

i probably haven't made a mix since cassettes were the method of choice. i was also the 80s kid who would hold a radio face-to-face to a cassette recorder to copy a song...real cool...those always sucked cause you would miss the first few seconds of a song while you ran across the room to hit record. nice. as an ode to this method i should have put Like a Virgin on the list.

The last mix I made for a friend I titled "Mostly Just California"... It was AFI, Blaqk Audio, Green Day, Tiger Army... But the 'mostly" part came in with some Cinema Bizarre (A German pop-band... they make me dance.)
Oh yeah!!
And Foxboro Hot Tubs as well..! But that, again, counts as California..

Oh how I envy your state. I'm all Canadian, and I have to deal with provinces... SO not cool.

-Just Like Heaven - The cure
-Mr. Ambulance Driver - The FLaming Lips
-Where would you like them left?- Blaqk Audio
- Any song from Yann Tiersen
- Your Hand In Mine (w/strings)- Explosions In The Sky
- This Celluloid Dream - AFI
- Any song from Niccólo Paganini
-Sophie's Tomorrow- Joe Hisaishi
- Takeoffs and Landings - the ataris

Those are artists/songs that really moved me , that everytime they get to my ears I just can't help but to daydream and telling myself "Dude, today is a good day" (even when it sounds exagerated :P)

I felt very much like Richard Thompson when he was asked in 1999 by Playboy magazine to make a list of the ten greatest songs of the millennium. To be able to make a list of only ten songs for someone that has never heard anything, is beyond difficult. Given another day or two, I would come up with about eight more lists.

1. Hallelujah--Leonard Cohen
2. Running Up That Hill--Placebo version
3. Solsbury Hill--Peter Gabriel
4. Strange Fruit--Billie Holiday
5. Who Wants To Live Forever--Queen
6. The Ubiquitous Mr.Lovegrove--Dead Can Dance
7. Ode To Joy--Beethoven's Ninth
8. This Time Imperfect--AFI
9. Toccata And Fugue In D Minor--Bach
10. Your Song--Elton John

And as hidden tracks: Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt", "Twenty Years" by Placebo and "Faust Arp" by Radiohead

Quite the brain-twister, though :)
