This week was the 6 year anniversary of the release of Sing the Sorrow. That was an important record for us, and in commemoration here is a recording of some of my phone messages when I got back from the first tour on Sing the Sorrow, as well as a snippet of Davey's vocal from But Home Is Nowhere.

also, when I image searched for the Sing the Sorrow cover, the first thing that comes up is this:

Sing the sorrow is a very important album to me because it was my very first AFI album and it was the first time I had ever heard of you guys! It is also one of my top favorite albums of all time.

Since the release of that album 6 years ago, you guys have changed my life for my many years to come. I want to thank you:)

I think I'm getting all teary!

Jade, for God's love, please post the full Davey vocals of But Home is Nowhere!!!

I was very happy to see that album artwork when I opened up your blog from Google reader. STS is my absolute favorite album and I think it's staying at that position for a long time.

Davey's voice gave me chills. THX?

Do you always come home to fun messages like that? Makes touring even sweeter, I suppose?!

DestinyAnne said...

That was really funny! Some of those guys sounded kind of stoned .....Lol! You even left some buisness messages in there! Hahaha....Much love Jade!

The phone calls-are you serious!?? Is that a joke or is that real? I nearly peed laughing so hard! Epic vocal moment from STS. That was the first AFI album I bought so it has a special place in my heart. Oh gee, still laughing- you really got me with that one!

STS is one of my favourite albums of all time! I can't believe it's been so long.. 6 years? Wow.

Those messages on your phone were so funny! Did you ever find out how those fans got your number?

And Davey's vocals sound so odd without the music behind them, haha.

I hope everything's going down great at the studio. Can't wait for the new record! Much love, as always! Chloe <3

Sing the Sorrow is my favorite album. Ever. I don't even have words to describe how much I love it. Those words have yet to be coined.

Aw, you do rule, Jade Pudget.

Racquel Valencia said...

I find it a little weird that you don't even recognise your own lead singer when you search your album's title. That's the Davey Havok I know... hairbrush and all.

Karlye said...

Yes! Sing the Sorrow is probably my favorite AFI album, so so so good. I can't believe it's been six years.

Hahaha, "Jade Pudget rules!" How on Earth did those kids get your number? The part with the kid from Nebraska was funny.

I like the fact that the guy is singing into a hairbrush, pretty classy if I do say so myself.

Melodia Sadpain said...

Wooh! Sing the Sorrow!! My favorite AFI record(closely followed by Decemberunderground). To me, every song on this album is flawless. And your guitaring is amazing from the first note to the last.

But....who commemorates 6 years? And who keeps their phone messages from 6 years ago??I love you Jade :)

Nice vocal here, one of the really beautiful lines of the song.

Those messages confuse me lol.

And how I'm glad I'm not the guy on that pic XD. But I thought only little girls sang in their hairbrush...

Drop Dead said...

Damn at Davey's voice :D Lovely as ever.
Hahha. The kid from Nebraska... Hahahaa.
How did these kids get your number anyway?
Nice picture..

Glass Spider Webs said...

I felt like such a creep listing to your messages. And even typing this is creepy. They were quite interesting.

The Davey vocals were amazing.

Katie said...

Hah. That's funny how kids call you like that. Do they still?

You know I think you sharing these strictly instrumental versions of songs and now a clip of just Davey singing will most likely result in some kids coming up with some pretty tight remixes. haha. We can only hope.

i remember when i bought sing the sorrow. that's the album that made me fall in love with AFI :) i had it on repeat for months and i've totally worn it out. now it's scratched and it skips, but i transported the songs onto my iPod, so that took care of that.

i think the dude singing into the hairbrush is totally feelin it too. yayuhhh.

by the way, i loved those voice messages.

Omg Davey's vocals were amazing!! I wish I could get an "all vox" CD!

Jordan said...

Wow, you probably have to change your number about 9,000 times a day.

I just made that statistical average using the skills I acquired in my elementary statistics course. Clearly, I make absolutely stellar grades.

Dave's vocal track reminds me of this funny story where I left my Ipod on shuffle for a party, and I completely forgot some of my band's recording bits were left of. (You know, random guitar samplings, some weird vocal bits in little clips that are about 10 seconds long) We were totally listening to some TV On the Radio and kickin' it just before one of the random vocal bits popped up and caused me to spill the good salsa.

Basically, don't let strangers get a hold of your number and don't put your Ipod on shuffle for a party. True facts.

Okay. Now that I've listened to the phone calls, I'm sitting here laughing, and somewhat terrified at how your answering machine's voice sounds. It could always just be the speakers, but it sounds like Darth Vader or some shit. And since when do answering machine's have a man's voice? Mine's a girl! Maybe Canada is just weird. I mean, we do have meeses and polar bears. That's just strange.

Sing the Sorrow was the album that opened my ears to the sounds of AFI. It gave me an appreciation for music that I thought I could never get into. Listening to that album was my introduction to your music and I'll never forget it. All of it is powerful and moving, but there is just something special about STS.

So, thank you AFI from the bottom, the top, or the middle of my heart.

On a lighter note, those phone calls would make me annoyed- British people, and Indian people leave me voicemails all the time.
But those drunk calls were pretty damn funny.

By the way, is that Dave Chapelle in the picture? Haha.

I'd originally heard AFI at Warped Tour years earlier, '01 maybe, kind of on accident (we were sitting in the shade of a hot dog stand trying to not die in the sun)...made a mental note, "This band rocks, I need to look them up..." And then never looked you up, because I'm lousy at that stuff. Sing the Sorrow came out, and I went, "HEY! Those guys! I remember those guys, and I liked those guys!" Bringin' it all back home ;) Little did I know AFI would end up my favorite band...and now I wish I'd paid more attention at Warped Tour :(

Okay Jade, time for a heart to heart. I've been a huge fan you guy's music for as long as I can remember. I listen to your music every day, because it is really the only music I listen to that doesn't seem to get stale after a week.

But I digress. Seriously guys, throw the fans a bone. Every day I come to your myspace or blog to see if you have even the tiniest music clip, and every day I end up disappointed. But it's really okay, you can't rush excellence, and I can't blame you for taking your time with your music. It is hard to find music worth listening to these days, much less find a band whose music stands the test of time.

All I'm asking is for ONE SONG. Or hell, if you're feeling generous, you could visit me on my birthday or something. Or eat vegan hotdogs with me until our stomachs explode. Or even put on a concert at my university (Henderson State, if you need the address, not that you care). I'm just kidding in most of this paragraph, but ONE SONG would be killer. If you don't release a song pretty soon I'm pretty sure my little ol' heart is going to give out. You wouldn't want that, would you? I mean, how would you guys feel if at my funeral my mom is all like.."Poor Anthony died because his favorite band wouldn't release a song soon enough." Not only would my mom be super pissed that you guys contributed to my death, but you would lose your biggest fan, me (Not because I dislike your music, but because I'm physically not able to enjoy it anymore, being dead and all). So before I end up dead tomorrow, give me ONE SONG. This week, this month, hell, even this year would suffice. I would even settle for a new Blaqk Audio song, because that side project is just about as amazing.

Well guys, I hope you somehow find my essay and read this. I really hope you read this, and take it to heart. I can feel my heart acting up, so you guys better hurry unless you want to play at my funeral. My mom will probably be quite pissed though, so enjoy.

PS - Please read this, at least. Please consider my dying wishes. I really do have a heart condition, but it's totally not life-threatening or anything. But lets just pretend like it is, just between us, okay? <3

-Anthony
