Just read the first review of Crash Love:

Very nice.

FILE UNDER: Arena rock of the future
AFI - Crash Love
Scott Heisel on 9/14/09 @ 7:00 AM

[4.5/5]

Many of today's bands like to describe their new records as "bigger sounding," simply because they convinced their labels to pay the massive fees for their dicking around in the studio. Most acts could learn more than a few lessons from AFI, a unit who are well aware that sounding big is all about having a vision in the songwriting phase. Which is why Crash Love's dozen tracks are packed with as much exuberance, mystery and drama one can handle.

Overseen by producers Joe McGrath (Alkaline Trio) and Jacknife Lee (Bloc Party, REM), the album is ambitious in its execution. AFI are a dynamic rock band at their core: The rhythm section of Adam Carson (drums) and Hunter Burgan (bass) has matured into a tighter, precise unit; guitarist Jade Puget's sense of the appropriate remains crystal clear; and frontman Davey Havok's cartwheeling down the pretentiousness tightrope puts a sweat-and-blood face to his ruminations on everything from celebrity culture to personal loss. But it's their detail to arrangements and atmospheres that separate AFI from the legion of subcultures who carry battered crosses under a "-punk" suffix. From the 15 seconds of '40s horror-movie ambiance that opens the gothmo "Torch Song," to the '90s-tinged, melancholy-and-menace of "It Was Mine," Crash Love reveals more treasures with repeated listens.

The brisk tempo and Johnny Marr-ish guitar jangle of "Veronica Sawyer Smokes" makes it the best single of 1986. Likewise, "OK, I Feel Better Now" would've been a jewel had it appeared on that Ross Robinson-produced Cure album: Here, it's just greatness as usual, offering a production girth so big, you have to use movie metaphors like "Technicolor," "widescreen" and "IMAX" to convey the vision. It's immediately followed by "Medicate," a pulsing rocker that's the more sophisticated, cosmopolitan cousin to Decemberunderground's "Kill Caustic." Reminding listeners that My Chemical Romance do not have the franchise in the simultaneously anthemic-yet-cocky department, there's "Sacrilege," driven by Puget's '70s guitar histrionics and Havok's loud 'n' proud vocal prowess. This year's model's power ballad, "Darling, I Want To Destroy You," is too animated for slow dances or placement on Grey's Anatomy, but still offers a somewhat dialed-down respite.

What does all this mean in the mythology of AFI? In no uncertain terms, Crash Love is an accomplishment that raises the bar for them as musicians and writers. In many aspects, AFI seem to be exiled on a psychic island of their own. Think about it: The hellfire-and-brimstone punk purists from the scene the band came up in aren't going to be lining up in front of the merch table anytime soon, and much of the spoon-fed American mainstream aren't going to readily embrace their stylistic inversions. Although the members of AFI can't go home anymore, they're exploring more sonic vistas than any random group of smelly dudes in a van plastered with hardcore stickers or Clear Channel-sanctioned modern-rock dullards kicking back in $8K-a-week coaches, combined. Fortunately for music fans, AFI are embracing the spirit of adventure in an age of indifference. (DGC/INTERSCOPE) Jason Pettigrew

I feel the need to tell you what I think about Fainting Spells. If that's a B-side, you guys just got me SUPER stoked for this album. I've been a fan since Black Sails came out and am still constantly surprised by you guys. This song has a really, really good feel to it. I don't really know what else to say.

I'm looking forward to your best album yet.

Impressive read and I enjoyed the break down of songs as well as the over all scope of the album. I'm going to wait for physical release to pick it up Im excited to hear that it's being reviewed well however the only ears I trust are my own. Can't wait to listen. See you in Detroit.

I really love the way AP mag phrases their reviews. They have a lot character to them, and that somehow makes me trust them more than anyone else. I'm fucking excited about the album, Jade!

Jamekae said...

I am ecstatic about this release, especially after hearing those teasers of Beautiful Thieves and Torch Song. With the former song, that little riff you've got going at the end of Beautiful Thieves makes me want to hear the guitar work in it like crazy.
I must say, your guitar tones are sounding so far so good. You could've gone for another Sing the Sorrow tone, as many guitar forums regard it as one of the best tones they've heard, yet I believe this is even more fitting to your playing style.

Those who've heard the tracks love it so far, I really believe this is only the start of AFI's golden era. (I wonder how many times you'll hear that for the next few years.)

It comes out on the 25th in Australia, so I'm walking down to the main street after school to demand for a copy (heh). If unsuccessful, driving down to Newcastle the next day. Excitement!

Congrats on the review. I can't wait until I get to review it. I'm sure it will go something like this: Jade Puget's awesomeness is what makes this band so great. Davey is ahhight but can be over the top sometimes. Adam's arms were made for drumming just as Jade's fingers were made for strumming. And Hunter is the icing on the cake. Okay I think you better get me the Cd now. Is it September 29th yet??

I am so excited for you guys. Finally, a great rock record from AFI. No, it's not "the old AFI" but, a much better, more musically experienced and classier AFI. Ive already heard Beautiful Thieves on a youtube guitar hero video and it is the bees knees!! Your guitar work is awesome, daveys voice sounds better then ever, and the bass and drum work are really driving the band. This album clearly soars already more then DU with just two songs!! I really hope you keep your word jade and post tabs for some crash love songs =) Thanks for the inspiration and i cant wait for CL like everyone else!

yet again i heard ANOTHER full length crash love song.

I'm now way more excited for the album after reading that review. Unfortunately, I can't see you guys in concert. I leave to study in Europe in 4 days and you guys will be playing in my city (Chicago) 2 days before my birthday. I can't believe the irony of this. I can finally go to see my favorite band without my parents telling me "no" and I literally cannot make it to see you because I'll be living in Italy. Whatever, this album just can't be your last is all. And if it is...it's not like I know what I'm missing or anything. This album is already one of my favorites and I've only heard two songs. Hell yeah!

Just when I don't think I can get any more excited you go and spring this on me Jade :) 5 days til Crash Love's released out here, the wait is almost at its en. From everything I've simply heard from yourselves to anyone who's heard it I can't help but smile at what you guys have achieved. I eagerly await that first listen and it's moments like these I just hits me in the face why your music is my favourite.

Go stuff dude, good stuff :)

i'm sure you know but there are at least 3 crash love songs leaked on youtube. i love the first minute into end transmission. still miss the slightly older afi, but det (don't even trip) i'm still buying the album and i'll see you guys live. the instrumentals are as cool as ever with more multi-tracked leads, but davey's lyrics are kinda cheesy ~_~.

p.s. now i know for sure your favorite position on the neck :p

how about one from a FAN?

torch song kicks off "the golden album" epically, it sounds viking hardcore with a mind blowing guitar line. anthemic as miseria cantare and the prelude, it is a bloody blatant clamor of the davey havok's signature miserablism. ive adored afi for the romantic sense of tragedy in words and melodies, now at times it borders on green day run-of-the-mill alternative, easygoing, simple choruses (cold hands, anyone?) arent my cup of tea. it seems as thought the frontman has released some of the pant tightness, without so much as a scream on this one. and jade puget seems determined to leave us starving for his glorious solos, just one (dancing through sunday), one again (the killing lights), and guess how many this time? and they go by as fast as a bird chirp..hunger is denied by hunter though, as his cold bassline on beautiful thieves leaves me awed speechless. it stands out as the most sophisticated album, edging on world class mastery as glimpsed in the utter sickness of medicate, and the glam guitar on it was mine. needless to say, this one will be one heard through the ages.

d said...

I listened to the album. Technically, it's your most proficient album ever and I like that the band is more audible that they were on decemberunderground (where everyone felt a bit mixed out). I don't really care for the album though. I'll give it a few more listens because I've been a fan since the late 90s, because I understand that it's different. Still, while DU incited distaste from me mostly because I felt that you were trying to take some of the emo thunder after you missed out on it during Sing the Sorrow, Crash Love just doesn't make me feel anything. It's just sort of there. I wish you the best with it though. Medicate doesn't seem to be tearing up the charts and I want nothing but success for AFI. Perhaps others not prejudiced by your old albums will latch onto Crash Love.

Derek said...

Firstly,

thankyou, for "sacrilege" truely.

and Great Great,

Great JOB on Crash Love. This album is so EPIC! No force feeding this one. I' was hooked on by the first listen! The sounds sound so big and expansive but not atmospheric (if that makes sense). The tracks seem so tight and the melodies are great. Beautiful, album really.

Amazing album. Thank-you to all you guys and to the producer and sound engineer's. THIS IS GOING TO BE REMEMBERED.

You did it Jade!

BellaDawna said...

Wow! After reading that and then listening to it on myspace, I am overwhelmed. It is brilliant! When hearing about the supposed themes of Crash Love, I had wondered about the "Younger" fans. Wondering if they would be able to connect with more mature content and less obvious angst. After listening to it though, I was really impressed by the transition and see the it really does incorporate something for everyone. Can't wait to see you guys live for the first time in MN, then at home in OK! You boys should be very proud! We are all proud for you :)

LOL, because he himself says he is vain. Hence the tight pink pants, and more so the magically disappearing smile lines around his eyes. Which were so hot btw, so sad that he made them disappear:( You have to love Davey's style, no one else in the world could wear those outfits and STILL look adorable. Although, if I were a man I would dress more like Jade :) Now if only I could play the guitar like him!!!

Even though I haven't heard the album yet, this is by far the best review I have read of Crash Love. It takes it for what it is and what was created and does not drag so many ridiculous labels from the history to try and pigeon hole your music.

I have come across quite a few over the last week. But all of those publications are so stuck on "Goth Punks release new album" etc etc. And it silly and lazy journalism.

But anyways, only a couple of days to go. Cannot wait to hear the new songs!!!

And that is an awsome review.
Dont pay attention to all the ridiculous negative comments saying you guys should go back to the old music. Then you guys would be a cruddy band for always staying exactly the same.

Hey Jade, couple questions / comments.

Was Davey wearing an upside down cross in that myspace interview? I also so him wearing a t-shirt in a video that has a cross with an X over it. Whats the significance in that?

Love the new album. Would love to hear more breakdowns of you on the guitar like the solo in Medicate. I think you guys have a nice mix of pop and punk, but I think if you had a little bit more elements from the instruments rather then electronic sounds it would be killer!

Hope you can answer my questions. Thanks! look forward to seeing you guys tour in Cali soon hopefully.

I'm not a professional critic or anything, I just wrote what was going through my head after my twice-over listen of the album. I have a feeling it's more raw and less straight-up than a real review. Hope you get a chance to read it, Jade; it would mean a lot (:

Jade,

I was at your show in Columbus last night, and I just wanted to let you know that I couldn’t have been more impressed. Out of all the shows I’ve been to, it was one of the best. Everything about your show was nothing less than flawless. Everyone is so amazingly talented that it is absolutely breathtaking. It was such a refreshing and wonderful experience to be apart of something so genuine-- for that I can’t possibly thank you enough.

After the show, I waited with a small group of people outside your bus and had the opportunity to meet each of you. It was awesome to see how much respect you guys have for your fans. All I expected was a simple autograph, but instead, I was able to have a genuine conversation with everyone; thank you so much for your time. I look forward to hearing the new Blaqk Audio album we talked about, and also seeing you on your second tour. If you could thank Davey again for giving us vegan candy, Smith for some very special artwork and Adam for helping my sister pick up her things after she dropped them in awe, it would be greatly appreciated J On that note, could you also tell Hunter that this is where Wade Boggs is: http://video.yahoo.com/watch/538012/2747389.

Thanks again for such a great experience-- it was so much more than I had ever expected. It is really refreshing for such talented musicians to be so gracious towards their fans. Good luck on the rest of your tour! Hopefully I’ll get to talk to you guys again.

Sincerely,
Logan Boggs.

Ahaha great MySpace interview. Davey likes pretty much everything Britney Spears has done lately. ROTFL Unless the jokes on me and he actually likes her music :D
You don't speak much, but always have something good to say when you do. Good points about pop music.
Come to L.A.!!!!!!!!

Dear Jade, I just got back from your concert at Bogarts in Cincinnati. This was my first concert ever and it was one of, it not THE best experience of my life. Thanks for putting on such a rocking show. I can't tell you how much it meant to me.

I know you posted this eons ago but I thought it was relevant to my question. But why can't I find your 2 disk cd anywhere in Canada more importantly Ontario? And where can I buy the necklace?

Thanks
